9 Steps to Prepare Your Home for a Roof Replacement

Ascent RoofingUncategorized

Is it time to schedule a roof replacement, and you’re ready to turn your home into a short-term work zone? Ascent Roofing is here to help you plan out a project timeline that works for you, aiming to make the process as easy as possible from start to finish.

As a homeowner, there are several safety precautions to keep in mind while getting your roof replaced. We’ve compiled the information you need to know before the project begins. Read on for nine steps on how to get fully prepared.

1. Relocate your cars for the duration of the project.

Contractors can get the job done faster when they have up-close access to the house, and you can give your car extra insurance by parking outside the active work zone. It’s okay to keep your vehicle in the garage, but it may be less convenient for you and your contractors to take it out in the middle of the work day.

2. Check your trees before the job starts.

Make sure any low-hanging tree branches are out of the line of fire and consider mowing the grass to let plant-debris clean-up time go faster. Working with our Ascent Roofing team? We’ll cover the perimeter with drop cloths to help keep the yard looking nice as well.

3. Pre-locate all accessible power outlets.

Contractors strongly appreciate knowing where they can and can’t plug in, preferably on the home’s exterior. It’s also good to keep in mind that some breakers will trip if they pull too many amps all at once, so it’s helpful to identify power outlets that can handle your contractor’s electrical output requirements.

4. Get grills and patio furniture out of the way.

Whether you have a shed, extra garage space, or just move everything farther out into the yard, it’s good to get all furniture and grills out of the way. That way, no matter the roofing system you choose, contractors can have an open workspace and more easily get started.

5. Take down satellite dishes and rooftop antennas, if applicable.

Call your cable provider in advance to have them come out and remove any dishes or antennas. If it’s a retired unit, our Ascent Roofing team is happy to take it down and to the dump along with other construction debris.

6. Safeguard delicate interior decorations.

If you have framed pictures hanging on the wall, light fixtures, or knick-knacks on shelves, it’s a good precaution to take them down. Likewise, you can go through the attic to cover any fragile belongings. Doing so will help protect items from damage or dust that may fall from the vibrations caused by roof machinery.

7. Have heightened awareness of how your surroundings change during roof replacement.

Be aware of any new obstacles created by construction equipment, like ladders, extension cords, and scaffolding over doors. As long as you’re alert, you can ensure all hazards are avoided.

8. Check-in with your kids and pets

Make sure that your kids understand how some areas are off-limits during construction. It’s also smart to set up a safe place for your pets so they don’t risk getting hit by falling objects inside the house or out. If it’s easier, you can plan to visit a family member’s home during work hours.

9. Let your neighbors know when construction is going to happen.

They will appreciate the opportunity to know your project timeline and adjust their schedules accordingly!
